Fidji Lapios (1990) is a French figurative painter living and working in London.
At first influenced by the New Realism movement, particularly in its use of collages and images that transcend the banality of life, Fidji Lapios creates distinctive landscapes, composed of imaginary scenes holding an eerie realism and that make one wonder whether these moments are part of the real world or not. Whilst Fidji Lapios paintings are representing real things that commonly exist in our environment, her work seeks to convey a sense of outer world that is timeless, curious and floating in between places.
Rooted in the language of magical realism, Fidji Lapios poses the question of timelessness in our lived world: as the paintings unfold, a state of uncertainty overcasts the scenes, seeking to reveal the ambiguity that landscapes hold with time, with ourselves and our imagination.
Nor place or time specific, the works are not representations, but invocations: spaces in which the natural and the artificial meet, blur, and entangle. Drawing on traditions of landscape painting while quietly upending them, Fidji Lapios creates scenes that hover between states — day and night, lit and dimmed, the real and the magical.
Fidji graduated with MA Hons from the National Superior School of Architecture of Paris-Malaquais, France, in 2016 and is currently part of the Turps Art School Off-Site programme for 2025-2026.
